Dignified Sluts?

From the Washington Post:

Women draped sexy lingerie over their street clothes as they marched through Cape Town on Saturday, bringing an international campaign against the notion that a woman’s appearance can excuse attacks to a country where rape is seen as a national crisis…

… “SlutWalks” originated in Toronto, Canada, where they were sparked by a police officer’s remark that women could avoid being raped by not dressing like “sluts.” “It’s very important that women should understand that their dignity should not be taken away from them,” said Tayla Orgill, who was among the Cape Town walkers…

One does wonder – does Ms. Orgill own a dictionary?  Does she know what “dignity” means?

To be sure, a woman dressed like a slut does not excuse rape – but being dignified does require a modicum of modesty in dress.  A woman wearing a miniskirt and a low cut blouse does not deserve to be raped, but she is also by no means dignified while so dressed.  In fact, a woman dressed like that has deliberately decided to present herself to men as a mere object – dressing like that is a to say, “hey, look upon me as a sexual plaything!”.

In contrast to the sheer idiocy of a “slut walk” for female dignity, I offer the words of Mary Lane over at Catholic Exchange:

…I don’t know that I can point to a moment when things changed. All I know is that last summer I was in a bikini, and this summer I’m not. Several months ago, I hardly thought twice about what the effect of what I am wearing will be on the men I meet out in public, and now I never leave the mirror in the morning without thinking about it.

I have come to realize that we live in a world in which guys are virtually expected to objectify women’s bodies. Of course, there is a difference between “appreciating” and “objectifying”—one is natural, the other is sinful. But that line is really thin for a guy, and it’s pretty hard to control—especially when he’s walking down the beach on any given Thursday in August.

This doesn’t mean that every guy who sees you in a bikini is objectifying you—it just means that it’s probably really hard for him not to, at least on some level…

I’m building up quite a list of things I’ll keep saying until everyone agrees with me, because I’m right.  Among them is the fact that advertising works.  The reason that literal tens of billions of dollars are spent every year on advertising is because it works – it convinces people to do things they might otherwise not have done.  Not everyone, of course.  Show a car ad to a million people and hardly any of them will head down to the dealership and buy a car…but a few will.  And that is why advertisement is done…not to get everyone to do it, but to get a few who wouldn’t have done it unless presented the offer via advertisement.

In a sense, everything we see is an advertisement.  And one of the things we see all the time in our society is enticements to sexual activity – coupled with, of course, the complete objectification of those who would gratify sexual desire.  You see it everywhere…car ads, beer ads, vacation ads…all of them spice their message with sexual content.  A woman walking down the street dressed like a slut is just another form of this advertisement, and like all advertisement it won’t move most people to act…but it will move some, including some who have been so heavily propagandized by advertising that they’ve lost all sense of decency.  These are the men who won’t take “no” for an answer…men who, indeed, consider it an outrage that any woman would ever dare say “no”.  So, they take what they want.

This is not to say that a reduction in advertising for sex would eliminate rape…but the fewer advertisement, the less it is shoved front and center of public consciousness, the less likely it is that any particular man will be moved to do it.  An additional benefit of this would be an overall improving of the moral tone of the public square…even men who never move towards direct evil are yet corrupted in their hearts by the advertising, becoming less respectful, and also less willing to defend honor when it is attacked.

The most important thing to remember here is that if we want to be people who are respected and treated as dignified human beings, then our duty is to act respectable and dignified.  A well dressed young man or woman of good manners is someone to whom respect and dignity naturally flows…it is asinine to expect a badly dressed man or woman acting like a rutting beast in public should be respected or thought of as dignified.   This “slut walk” is a negation of dignity…and the real pity is that those participating in it have been so hoodwinked by modern lies that they don’t even understand what they are doing.

“This doesn’t mean that every guy who sees you in a bikini is objectifying you—it just means that it’s probably really hard for him not to, at least on some level”…

Let’s be clear. If a woman looks good in a bikini, EVERY man looking at her is objectifying her — but that’s not a bad thing. It’s just the way it is. And none of us feel guilty about it.

But you should – a human being is something of immense importance and must always be thought of as a human being, not as an object. To do otherwise is a horrible thing.

I’m sorry, Mark, but I disagree. Why should the person who is being objectified feel guilty? Isn’t the guilty party the one who is doing the objectifying? And so, why must the victim of rape be blamed? Rape is purely the action and therefore the fault of the rapist. No one asks to be violated. That’s the point of the Slutwalks. And while I’m at it, there are people who still think that women who dress in a certain way are ‘asking for it’. Unbelievable! So what is proper or respectable dressing? Is it a skirt below the knee? Pants? Loose pants? Big shirts? Low heels? What? Is a woman allowed to show her toes (because I must admit, I’ve got sexy toes – does that mean I’m in trouble?). And what about those diapers? Because, as you may or may not know, babies get raped as well. Are Pampers too racy, do you think? Not to mention grandmothers – have you seen a slutty old lady lately? No! Rapists are predators, and any person who is unable to control their urges to rape, murder, abuse etc is a danger to society, and should be removed from it.

sin comes from a mans heart (or a womans, it goes both ways)…it does not come from what he looks at…but from how he behaves…nothing you see can make you sin…that only makes you a witness…what you do with it is up to you

    Mark,
I’m not thrilled with the slutwalks, but I get the point. Found out yesterday that a former student of mine was raped by a former boyfriend this summer. I don’t know what she was wearing, nor do I care. The guy should burn.

The same culture that tells girls they should look easy tells boys that girls are easy and available. The same culture that tells girls not to act with dignity and self respect tells boys that girls do not have dignity and do not deserve respect. There is no excuse for rape but there is also no excuse for tolerating a culture that encourages contempt for women either. We can’t give awards to songs that call women whores and bitches and talk about slapping them around and treating them as nothing but sex objects and then be surprised when young men think of women as whores and bitches and think it is fine to use them sexually and knock them around.

      Casper,

There is no actual point to a “slut walk” – it is an asinine response. It is a stupid assertion that lack of standards means that a certain standard must be me. Sorry, doesn’t work that way.

I saw the real trashiness of female style getting a foothold with Madonna. Before that women were trying to look sexy but mostly trying to be classy/sexy. Even the trampier looks had boundaries. Suddenly it was underwear worn as clothing and bra straps showing and general low-class trashy impressions. About this time I noticed music starting to tell young girls to act like hookers and sluts. Again I tie this in with the general timeline of videos. I saw my daughter and friend’s daughters trying to imitate videos and doing pelvic thrusts and putting on what they thought were sexy faces. It kind of sneaked up on us because it was so new and then we all had a real hard time fighting it. My friends and I had a hard time trying to keep our little girls little girls when the culture around them was trying to turn them into sluts.

It wasn’t just short skirts and padded bras and too much makeup like it was when I was younger, it was actually trying to look like whores and sluts, and it was being directed at little girls. There has been a very strong movement to cheapen women starting with young girls and now we see it on the street everyday, in stores, on TV and in movies. Now every female singer does moves imitating sex acts on stage, even the young ones like Miley Cyrus, even the country singers.

The goal used to be to look sexy. Now it is to look easy.

“To be sure, a woman dressed like a slut does not excuse rape – but…”
No, there is no “but” one [what] does or does not. Choices are are made. period.

In the short form– it is not the women’s’ problem in whole but one of a nation.

    • Sparky August 20, 2011 / 11:59 pm

It is the problem of a nation. But I wonder how clearly young men understand that there is no excuse to use women sexually when they are bombarded every day with messages that women are there to be used sexually and with scorn and contempt. Children are empty slates and we write upon them what we want them to learn.

We expect men to at least understand that rape is wrong. There has always been rape and there always will be rape but at least the message in society has also been that it is wrong to use a woman as just a sexual object. Now society does not send that message. Society now sends the message that women are there for the use of men and that women should advertise their accessibility.

      db,

True, all of us are ultimately responsible for our actions – but all of our actions are based upon all the information we receive. It is more likely that people will be lousy if they are continually fed lousy information.

Yes, it is very hard to control one’s hormonal emotions toward women who are scantily clad. I was sitting at a service station just recently and saw a girl walking down the street with just a bikini top, and real short, tight shorts on…of course, she had a boy walking with her down the street, but took no thought I’m assuming to the effect she was having on passerby’s to her appearance.

Most of what gives women the idea that they can dress how they want without any ill effects on society is the production, and purveying of pornography.

The whole creation is under the control of Satan. To realize the significance of Adam’s betrayal of God and the subsequent curse that fell on the human race, you must be aware that:

    1. Before this happened, Adam was the master of the earth.

    2. They knew God had forbidden them to eat the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

    3. It wasn’t the eating of a forbidden tree that was evil but the conscious choice of Adam to believe a lie of Satan rather than to believe God.

    4. As long as he obeyed God, he was under God’s authority and protection, but in the moment that he obeyed Satan, he came under the curse of Satan’s authority. The mastery and dominion Adam had over the earth and nature fell into the sinister hands of Satan. Man immediately became a slave to Satan, an instrument for his every wish and desire.

    5. Man remains under the rule of Satan until he voluntarily decides to submit himself to the Lordship of Jesus Christ and come back under the authority and protection of God.

In view of these facts, it is no wonder that the earth and sea are full of poisonous, wild and ravaging beasts and creatures. It is no wonder that our history books are a perpetual description of hatred, bloodshed and tyranny. It is no wonder that our world today is so full of suffering and misery of various forms. It is no mystery that women are brutally raped and murdered. It is no mystery when one realizes that this earth and everything in it have come under the tyrannical rule of Satan, himself.

Pornography has truly put many innocent, beautiful children and women at risk … and it has truly destroyed the lives of many men who have came under the domination of pornography’s spell on the male mind, and his relationship with his wife, and family.
